I just got back from the doctor.
In a nutshell... Not the news we wanted to hear, but not bad. No weight bearing yet. Doctor said it would have been a stretch to bear weight at this point regardless of age, it's just the nature of the beast. The joints are involved which requires additional time and not something you want to mess with. We will return in four weeks to reevaluate.
Good news... All injury spots are progressing nicely, no more boot, right leg is actually improving quicker than the left & will probably be the first leg to bear weight. Remember, that was the leg in which everything was "shattered"! The left femur injury was worse than the right, involving the knee, pins, etc. Doctor said it is a possibility there may be a "fine tuning" surgery at some point to remove some of the hardware.
Sad news... Dr. Jaeblon has accepted a new position in another state and will be leaving the first of the year. He has been such a strong player in my dad's recovery that it is hard to imagine him not part of the team. Thankfully the trauma surgery is behind us!
We are still planning on bringing my dad home (his house) for the afternoon on Thanksgiving. Next week we will be visiting the gastro doctor on Monday and the urologist on Thursday. I will write again after that.
Thank you blog readers for all your support!
Thanks for the update Kay. I'm sorry he's not quite ready for weight bearing on either leg but since it will be only four weeks until he sees them again that is good. I'm sure he is disappointed but he'll be much stronger then. With removing the boot does that mean the ankle and heel are doing really well? That is totally amazing. Since this happened last August I, and probably you also, have been worried about that area.
ReplyDeleteIt's great news and a wonderful celebration that he will be in his own house for Thanksgiving day with his family. I'm sure that will brighten him up a little. Will you be able to take him by car or will he have to be driven by an ambulance type truck?
I'm sorry to hear that Dr. Jaeblon is moving. He was fantastic in what he did for your dad. I'm glad he was here when we needed him the most. Will he see your dad on his next visit in four weeks or will be be gone?
We won't be back for Thanksgiving this year. Jim, Karen and the kids will be visiting us down here. We will be back at Christmas and plan to see your dad then. I spoke to him on the phone the other night and he sounded great. He is anxious to be on his own feet though. Let us know how his doctor visits go next week.
Thanks.
Thanks for the up date. I am sure a trip home for Thanksgiving will do him a world of good.

The most important thing is he is still progressing.

Hi Aunt Janet!
ReplyDeleteTo answer your questions... Yes, the R foot & heel are doing amazingly well. In fact, Dr. Jaeblon thinks the R leg will bear weight first! That's incredible given the fact Dr. Jaeblon had used the "A" word more than once.
As of today my dad said he is worried about going home on Thanksgiving since he isn't allowed to stand. I told him it is up to him, we are not going to insist he go if he really isn't up to it. If he did go, it would be via Joe-Josh-Jon transport. Like he has said before, going out of his "secure boundaries" is a scary thing for him, having no control over anything.
Yes, Dr. Jaeblon will be there for the next visit in December, but it sounded like he'll be gone after that:( He talked about his partner treating my dad. Not sure exactly who that will be since he always has so many "helpers" along with him.
Glad to hear Jim, Karen & the kids will be with you for Thanksgiving. Looking forward to seeing you at Christmas. Maybe we can get a good game of euchre going!
